Configuration and log file management for testing

While working in a development environment, certain settings and configurations may not be available or readily editable until the files or dialog boxes are in a production environment for a deployed robotic solution. The Miscellaneous tab provides shortcuts to files and folders that are frequently accessed by developers, and shortcuts to dialog boxes that are part of the Accelerators. You can implement the Accelerator dialog boxes in a solution but they are not easily testable before implementing the solution. The Miscellaneous tab provides hyperlink access to the following features:

  • Diagnostic runtime log files
  • Filtered runtime log files
  • Runtime, Common, and Credential Manager configuration files
  • Installation and executable directories
  • Assisted Sign-on and Start My Day methods

In the following image, click the + icons to learn more about using the Miscellaneous tab.

Diagnostic runtime log files

Diagnostic logs are a vital tool for automation developers because the logs capture exceptions and errors and capture steps related to automation execution and control matching.

Before using logs for debugging a solution from Pega Robot Inspector, you must enable File Publisher or Log4Net Publisher for Pega Robot Runtime. To capture logs from Pega Robot Studio menu, click Debug > Options. To ensure that all actions and events are captured, set the level to Verbose.

In the center of the following image, slide the vertical line to see the two runtime logging configuration items for File Publisher and Logging level.

Filtered runtime logs

Because the log files capture many events, you can filter the runtime log messages to look for specific actions and events to reduce the time the developer needs to locate necessary actions.

On the Miscellaneous tab of Pega Robot Inspector, double-click Edit Log Filter. The Edit Log Filter is a search function that looks for specific words in each log entry. The Edit Log Filter has a default set of options to filter.

To add a specific entry, you search an existing runtime log to determine what to locate and enter it in the Log Filter field. No special characters are required. Once you update the Edit Log Filter, you can save the filter parameters for the session to Pega Robot Inspector or restore the defaults during a debugging session.

For example, you are debugging a solution and want to watch the events that occur for one automation, mainly Main_P_LoadCustInfoValues. There are too many log entries in the regular runtime log file to quickly locate the necessary lines. Using the Edit Log Filter to find the specific automation entries of Main_P_LoadCustInfoValues makes the log entries easier to locate and analyze.
