Microsoft Edge in Internet Explorer compatibility mode

Organizations often use legacy web applications that only work properly in Internet Explorer. Although Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer (IE), organizations can now use Microsoft Edge in IE compatibility mode to access these web applications. With Pega Robot Studio, you can interrogate and automate a web application by using Edge in IE compatibility mode.

After you configure Microsoft Edge to open the web application in IE mode, add the web application to Robot Studio. You select Edge as the browser, and Robot Studio automatically detects that the web application is running in IE mode and uses the legacy interrogation and match rules options.

Internet Explorer match rules

When matching controls that you interrogate in IE mode, Robot Studio uses a different set of match rules than the standard match rules it uses for Google Chrome and Edge Chromium.

The following table displays a sample of the web-based match rules:

Object Name

  • Anchor Target
  • Anchor URL

  • Image Alternate Text
  • Image Name

Table Data Cell (TD)

  • Table Cell Column Index

If Pega Robot Studio cannot match the control based solely on the web-based match rules, it uses the standard default match rules.

When controls match in Pega Robot Studio, some matches use only the web-based match rules. The following list contains the matches that require a combination of standard default and web-based match rules:

  • Element ID
  • Attribute Value
  • Control Children
  • Element Index
  • Element Path
  • Element Inner Text

For more information about web-based match rules, see Web-based match rules.

HTML Table Designer

The HTML Table Designer is a UI that is accessible only through web applications in IE mode. With the HTML Table Designer, you can interrogate HTML tables. You activate it through the Interrogation Form.

In the Interrogation Form, you select the HTML Table Designer capture option, and then drag the target icon to the table that you want to include in your solution. Robot Studio then opens the HTML Table Designer for the selected table. Use the HTML Table Designer to establish matching criteria for the table and create a table schema. The table schema shows the relationships between heading rows, data rows, and table sections. When you complete the table schema in the HTML Table Designer, the table objects are incorporated into the solution and appear in Object Explorer for use in the solution. For more information about HTML Table Designer, see the HTML Table Designer.
