Content types

Pega Knowledge supports content types that streamline the article-creation process. A content type defines default values, such as review settings, allowed categories, and languages, so authors can create content faster and more consistently.

Default content types

Pega Knowledge Constellation supports three system-defined content types: Authored, URL, and Attachment. Administrators cannot create custom content types in Pega Knowledge Constellation:

  • Authored. Refers to content that authors create and maintain directly in Pega Knowledge, using the rich text editor. Pega Knowledge is the sole source of this content.
  • URL. Refers to content that resides on an external website. Authors provide a link to the external URL instead of duplicating the content in Pega Knowledge.
  • Attachment. Refers to content that already exists in an external document, such as a PDF, Word, or text file. Authors upload one attachment per article instead of duplicating the content in Pega Knowledge. Only one attachment is supported for each article.

You select the content type when you create a new article, which in turn will influence the content authoring window.

Utilizing content types

When creating articles, authors can assign them to any of the active content types, effectively importing the default values set for that content type. The content type you select will also influence the elements available in the create content window:

  1. The Authored content type will make the Content field available.
  2. The URL content type will make the Content source URL field available.
  3. The Attachment content type will make the Attachment field available.

Once you select a content type, you are free to make changes to the default values according to your need. Until you save the article draft or submit the article, changes to the content type will change the article defaults, which may cause a loss of progress in your authoring efforts. For example, if you initially select the content type Authored and enter text in the Content field, then you change the content type to URL, all text will be lost.

Additionally, when a change in content type causes previously selected categories to be invalid, you will be notified when you try to submit the article. To avoid issues, select your intended content type as soon as you start to create an article.
