Considerations for Constellation

It is important to verify that the Pega Constellation design system offers the business outcomes and capabilities that your application needs. Review the guidelines below to see if Constellation is right for your use case.

Guidelines for new applications:

  • For new applications that you build on top of existing applications that do not use Theme Cosmos, keep the original architecture. For example, if an existing application uses Theme UI-Kit, and you build a new application based on this existing one, the new application must also use Theme UI-Kit.

Guidelines for existing applications:

  • Keep existing applications on their current architecture.

In Pega Platform™ ’23, applications that use the Constellation UI architecture can import assets, such as cases and landing pages, from existing UI Kit and Theme Cosmos applications. See more information.

Additional considerations for the Constellation design system

When deciding if Constellation is right for you, it is also important to consider the different configuration approaches associated with Constellation and Theme Cosmos and the different skill levels that come with each.

The Cosmos design system: the customization approach

Cosmos uses the traditional UI architecture, which means that application builders drag UI controls from a palette onto a canvas by using Dev Studio, and developers customize the behaviors of actions on the UI control. This emphasis on customization over configuration gives you flexibility but can lead to inconsistent UX and challenges with upgrades.

Required skill level: Cosmos requires deep knowledge of traditional Pega UI concepts and a front-end developer.

The Constellation design system: the configuration approach

Constellation uses a new view-based architecture, and Pega Infinity offerings include out-of-the-box UX solutions. With Constellation, you can use App Studio to “configure” the outcomes that you need and let Constellation generate the end-to-end experience for you. As a result, you build applications quickly, ensure consistency across the UI, and focus on configuring business logic instead of building UI from scratch.

Required skill level: Constellation prioritizes easier authoring for low-code and professional developers and does not require deep knowledge of traditional Pega UI concepts.
