Interpreting evidence from live use
A business result is more meaningful when stakeholders can interpret it alongside evidence of how the delivered capability is being used. The Solution Designer helps stakeholders read two forms of evidence together:
- A business measure shows whether the agreed outcome is improving.
- An operational measure shows whether the behavior or process intended to support that outcome is occurring.
The combined evidence helps identify where further examination should begin:
- The outcome and intended behavior are improving: Examine which design decisions contributed and whether the result is becoming durable.
- The outcome and intended behavior are below expectations: Examine adoption, support, friction, exception handling, and the transition from former practices.
- The intended behavior is occurring, but the outcome remains below expectations: Examine whether a design decision or dependency is limiting the result.
- The outcome is improving, but the intended behavior is not occurring consistently: Examine whether other factors are contributing to the result and whether the improvement is durable.
Determine what the evidence supports
These patterns provide an initial direction rather than a definitive cause. Business and operational stakeholders confirm what changed in practice. The Solution Builder and relevant technical or data contributors help explain solution behavior and dependencies.
Early evidence may demonstrate a credible change in work before sufficient operating evidence supports an evaluation of the business outcome. Represent the change as an early signal until the available evidence can support a meaningful interpretation of the outcome.
Tip: Capture the initial interpretation in one statement: The evidence shows [business result] while [operational behavior]. This pattern suggests examining [adoption, design, or dependency] with [relevant contributors]. Additional evidence about [uncertainty] will help stakeholders determine the appropriate response.
The initial interpretation identifies where examination should begin without treating the evidence pattern as proof of cause. Once the evidence can support a meaningful result, the Solution Designer can trace that result to the work and design decisions that contributed to it.
