Supporting the next business decision

Evidence from realized value can reveal different opportunities for continued improvement. The Solution Designer helps stakeholders distinguish the type of opportunity before recommending what the business should consider next.

  • Deferred value: A capability held for a later increment may now have the evidence, conditions, or priority needed to progress.
  • A design decision that can contribute more: Evidence may support a focused refinement to the existing solution.
  • An adjacent business problem: Live use may reveal a related source of friction, risk, cost, or opportunity that warrants separate framing.

Evaluate the strongest opportunity

These opportunities can appear together, and each leads to a different decision.

Different opportunities lead to different decisions

Evaluate the strongest opportunity by asking:

  • What evidence supports the opportunity? Identify the result, shortfall, constraint, or newly visible problem.
  • Why does the opportunity matter now? Connect it to the agreed outcome or a newly identified business need.
  • What value could it enable? Identify the measurable improvement the opportunity could support.
  • What conditions would support progress? Clarify the ownership, evidence, capability, assumptions, and dependencies involved.
  • What decision does the business need to make? Determine whether to advance the opportunity, examine it further, or retain it for later consideration.

The Solution Designer develops and communicates the recommendation. Business stakeholders determine what to pursue and how the opportunity enters the roadmap.

Tip: Frame the recommendation in one evidence-based statement: "Evidence from the delivered solution shows [signal]. The business could consider [opportunity] to improve [measure or outcome]. Progress depends on [conditions, assumptions, or dependencies]. The next business decision is whether to [advance, examine, or retain the opportunity]."

An evidence-based recommendation makes the opportunity, expected value, required conditions, and next business decision visible without prescribing what the business must pursue.
