Use cases for offline projects
Enabling Cases in Pega Infinity™ products to run independently of network data connections helps users who are in the field to complete tasks that are otherwise impossible without resorting to complex paper forms. Because offline use cases run on a local device instead of the cloud or a server, there are limitations for users who work on an offline-enabled Case. Offline users can work only with the information that they have available outside of the system, so not all use cases are suitable for an offline project.
Offline use case indicators
Offline support is included in Pega Infinity to aid in digital transformation. Tasks traditionally handled by complex paper forms can now be digital to increase accuracy and efficiency. Ideal use cases involve users who work in the field, such as in industrial settings or remote areas.
Many companies are interested in maintaining work continuity as part of their disaster preparedness, while other companies want to enable their workforce to work more freely than before. Neither of these use cases is an ideal candidate for an offline-enabled case.
While it is possible to push updates to the field, users in the field can remain out of sync for extended periods of time. If a user is not fully synchronized, they might be working with outdated information, and developers should design the application with this scenario in mind.
The following table describes indications of whether a task is suitable for offline support:
Use case is a good fit for offline | Use case is not a good fit for offline |
---|---|
The task is often handled with a paper form. | The task is already supported in an online application. |
The task is mission-critical. | The task is NOT mission-critical. |
A majority of the users are offline for at least a portion of their day. | Only some of the users are offline some of the time. |
The task primarily involves collecting and recording data in the field. | The task requires cross-referencing data and complex decisions. |
The information needed to do the task is relatively static. | The task relies on up-to-the-minute data accuracy. |
