Microsoft Office connectors

Microsoft Office is one of the most widely used software products. Many business processes rely on the end user using the Office applications to reference data from an Excel spreadsheet, create documents in Word, or send emails using Outlook. To enable you to automate processes that involve Office, Pega Robot Studio provides connectors for the following Office products:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

To interact with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, Microsoft Office must be installed on the machine that runs the automation. Pega Robot Studio offers two options for working with Excel: Excel Connector and Microsoft Excel. Excel Connector does not require Office, while Microsoft Excel does. To learn more about automations using Excel, see Excel Connector.

Note: Pega Robot Studio supports Microsoft Office 2010 and newer.

Microsoft Office connectors in an automation

To use an Office connector in an automation, locate the connectors in the Internal Data Sources > MS Office Applications section of the Toolbox tab.

Select the connector you wish to use and drag it to the automation surface. Pega Robot Studio adds the connector to the GlobalContainer. The connector is also in the Globals section of the Palette tab for easy inclusion in an automation.

The properties grid updates to display the properties for the selected connector. For example, a customer service representative (CSR) uses an automation to retrieve customer information and logs the information in a bookmarked Word document. The bookmarked document is specified in the properties grid of the Word connector.

As is the case when adding other Palette items to an automation, dragging a connector from the Globals section of the Palette to the automation displays a Select action dialog box to select the property, method, or event that you want to use in the automation. Each connector provides properties, methods, and events relevant to the associated Office product.

Outlook connector

Pega Robot Studio provides you with multiple connectors for Outlook, including:

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Outlook Appointment
  • Microsoft Outlook Contact
  • Microsoft Outlook Mail
  • Microsoft Outlook Note
  • Microsoft Outlook Task

The Microsoft Outlook connector allows you to interface with the application to perform operations such as opening, closing, and monitoring events.

The other Microsoft Outlook connectors provide properties, methods, and events for working with Outlook items, such as Appointments, Contacts, Mail, or Tasks.

For example, if your automation cannot integrate with your Pega Platform™ application, the Mail connector can be used to send an email.
