Applications overview

Companies can improve workflow efficiency by automating applications within Pega Robot Studio to more efficiently interact and exchange data. Communication between applications that do not already expose a well-defined API is difficult, but Pega Robot Studio provides developers with tools to integrate these systems and interact with one another. By adding an application to Pega Robot Studio, developers automate and access the workflow process without the need for custom APIs or when Pega Platform™ cannot handle the communication and integration between applications.

Within a Pega Robot Studio project, application project items store all information that is needed to work with the targeted application. The items store information about how to access the application and its target object hierarchy and provide access to target properties, methods, and events that are used in automation. Pega Robot Studio does not require recompiling or modifying the target application in any way.

Pega Robot Studio integrates such applications as Windows applications, web applications, and emulator applications. Pega Robot Studio provides specific application project items for the different target applications that a developer needs to access and automate to improve the workflow process.

Application types

While applications share some common properties, developers can use specific properties to mimic how users interact with the application. These settings provide Pega Robot Studio with powerful options that other solutions (such as API and workflow changes) cannot always offer without complicated configuration.

The following table shows sample application types and target applications:

Application type Target applications
Windows Windows applications, including Java applications and SAP GUI
Web Web-based applications that run on Microsoft Edge in Internet Explorer (IE) Compatibility Mode, Google Chrome, and Electron applications
Text Host-based or mainframe applications that you access through an emulator
